History of Verbier
The history of Verbier is closely linked to winter tourism, which officially began in 1927. The first hotels were built in the centre of the village, followed by the Verbier Swiss Ski School. In 1935, a road linked Le Châble to Verbier-village, which was extended fourteen years later to Verbier-station. In 1937, the Société de développement de Verbier was founded.
Today, Verbier is particularly renowned for its classical music festival, the Verbier Festival, which takes place every summer, as well as for the Verbier Xtreme, a freeride competition. A stage town for the Tour de France in 2009, as well as for the Tour de Suisse, Verbier is an excellent holiday destination.
